A protected place under pressure

Conservation succeeds when ecology, livelihoods and institutions move together.

The Galapagos conservation story contains extraordinary successes: species brought back from the edge, introduced mammals removed from islands, habitats restored and a marine reserve recognized around the world. It also contains a warning. Protection on paper is not enough when the forces of change grow faster than the institutions designed to manage them.

The ecological barrier

The most important defense is the barrier between the continent and the islands—and between islands. Every aircraft, cargo vessel, passenger, plant, animal and package creates a pathway. Biosecurity, inspection, clean transport systems and rapid response are essential because prevention is far less costly than controlling an invasive species after establishment.

Invasive species

Goats, pigs, rats, cats, dogs, insects, pathogens and invasive plants can transform island ecosystems. Some eat native species; others compete for food, alter vegetation, spread disease or disrupt reproduction. Large eradication programs have demonstrated what coordinated science and management can achieve, but new arrivals and climate-driven changes keep the challenge alive. More than 1,600 introduced species have now been recorded, though only a fraction behave invasively; one of the largest island restorations ever attempted, Project Isabela, cleared goats from Santiago, Pinta and northern Isabela.

Fishing and the marine world

Sharks, tuna, albatrosses and other wide-ranging species cross the boundaries of the marine reserve and national jurisdictions. Their conservation requires enforcement inside protected waters and cooperation across the Eastern Tropical Pacific. Illegal fishing, bycatch and market demand can undo local protection far from public view. In 2022 Ecuador enlarged protection with the new Hermandad Marine Reserve, adding some 60,000 square kilometres along the migratory corridor toward Cocos Island and bringing the protected marine area to roughly 198,000 square kilometres.

Climate and El Niño

El Niño events can suppress nutrient-rich upwelling, disrupt breeding and cause high mortality among marine iguanas, seabirds and marine mammals. On land, increased rainfall can favor invasive plants and insects. Climate change may intensify or alter these pressures, compounding the effects of small populations, restricted ranges, pollution and harvesting. Strong events in 1982–83, 1997–98, 2015–16 and 2023–24 each brought sharp die-offs, and stronger El Niños are projected as the climate warms.

Growth, services and fairness

Water, energy, waste, housing, transport and food systems are conservation issues in an inhabited archipelago. A durable model must keep tourism high-value and within ecological limits while expanding local skills, ownership, purchasing and benefits. Residents must be able to build good lives without undermining the natural systems on which the economy depends. Close to 29,000 people now live across the inhabited islands, and about 280,000 visitors arrive each year.
